SC orders to appoint acting PCB chairman in seven days

LAHORE: The Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court has declared the decision to restore Zaka Ashraf as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman illegal and ordered that an acting chairman and chief election commissioner be appointment within seven days.

The case was heard by a two member bench comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Saqib Nisar. During proceedings the court ruled that the decision of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) restoring Zaka Ashraf as PCB chairman was illegal.

The court further ruled that under the 10 July, 2014 PCB constitution an acting chairman and chief election commissioner should be appointed in seven days.

PCB chairman Najam Sethi informed the court that he would not be contesting in the next elections of the cricket board.

Speaking to reporters later, Sethi said he would continue to act as the PCB chairman until a new appointment was made and would use his vote in the board’s elections.

The saga began in May last year when the then-chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf, was suspended for holding dubious elections.

Since then, Ashraf and Najam Sethi have been engaged in a power struggle for the top job. Each was reinstated in turn while the other was thrown out of office through a series of court rulings and government decrees. Sethi is the current chairman, having been restored for the third time earlier this month.
