Ex-CJ sends Rs 20bn libel notice to Imran

ISLAMABAD – Lawyers of former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Thursday sent a defamation notice worth 20 billion rupees to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.
Speaking to journalists outside the Supreme Court, the lawyers said that Imran Khan was attempting to disparage and malign the superior judiciary. They said that the legal proceedings would be initiated against the PTI chief if he failed to apologise for the allegations he had leveled earlier against the former chief justice.
The PTI chief had accused the former chief justice of poll rigging in the 2013 general election. The lawyers also said that the services rendered by the former chief justice were laudable and were appreciated at the national and international level. In the notice served to the PTI chief, Iftikhar stated that Imran Khan leveled allegations against him after his retirement that was why he resorted to initiate legal proceedings against the PTI chairman.
Imran had been accusing the former chief justice for his involvement in the rigging of May 11 general elections. The cricketer-turned politician had been reiterating that Iftikhar Chaudhry was involved in match fixing of May 11. The footages and other relevant material have been obtained by the counsel team of former chief justice in this regard. Iftikhar Chaudhry retired from the post in December last year.
On the other hand, Arsalan Iftikhar, son of Iftikhar Chaudhry, is also filing a reference against the Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman. Arsalan had claimed that Imran Khan doesn't fulfill the qualifications specified in Article 62, 63 of the constitution to contest election, adding that he was neither honest (Saadiq) nor righteous (Amin). Arsalan had also received Imran’s nomination papers from the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Arsalan remarked that Imran Khan has not mentioned his eldest daughter in his nomination papers. He wrote a letter to religious scholars to seek an answer over Imran’s eligibility under Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution. The letter addressing the Islamic Ideology Council chairman and 36 Islamic scholars requests advice about the PTI chairman.
