PML-N leader moves SC to stay LB polls in Islamabad
Online

ISLAMABAD: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking stay of the local government (LG) polls in federal capital scheduled for July 27. Petitioner PML-N leader Zafar Ali Shah has made the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Interior and Law ministries as respondents. The petitioner has contended that the ECP has issued schedule for the polls without any legality, as parliament has not approved a bill pertaining to LG system in Islamabad. The petitioner argued that LG polls were held in Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and cantonment boards on a party basis, which is not correct. The apex court should stay holding of LG polls in Islamabad until the parliament passes the legislation. He said that the polls in Islamabad should be conducted along with LG polls in Punjab and Sindh in September. The petitioner contended that if a legal issue arises after the polls were held, who will protect it and the matter needs explanation.
