Pakistan desires to resolve all disputes through talks
FO terms Afghan-Taliban talks a breakthrough; Pakistan against proxy war

ISLAMABAD – Foreign Office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah has said that it is against any sort of proxy war and desires good neighborly relations, adding that we want to resolve all disputes through talks.

To a question about the Afghan government and the Afghan Taliban talks hosted by Pakistan, Foreign office spokesperson termed them as a breakthrough saying this is the first time that the two sides have direct talks. He said that Pakistan played the role of facilitator in the talks, adding that the atmosphere of talks was cordial and both the sides agreed to meet again after Ramzan.

Khalilullah said that this also reflects the interest of both the sides to continue the process. He added that the two sides have expressed interest of building peace in Afghanistan. He said that important countries were supporting this peace process which is in everybody’s interest especially for the peoples of the region.

To another question, the spokesperson said that Afghanistan has appreciated Pakistan's role in facilitating talks with the Taliban. He said that Pakistan was committed to supporting an Afghan led and Afghan owned peace process. “We remain in touch with the Afghan authorities and we can see strong desire on their part to promote the peace process.” he added.

To a question about Islamic State, the spokesperson said that our security agencies were vigilant and advised to take necessary action. He said that Pakistan did not allow its nationals to participate in conflicts outside of Pakistan. To a question about the arrest of defence analyst Zaid Hamid in Saudi Arabia, Khalilullah said our embassy has requested the Saudi authorities for consular access to the arrested analyst and provide information about the charges levelled against him and confirm the reports of his sentence.
