LG polls in Islamabad: Senate body seeks opinion from law experts over SC orders
By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges (RPP) on Wednesday seeks advises from law experts over the Supreme Court’s (SC) orders for holding local bodies’ election in Islamabad. The committee held its meeting in parliament house. To this effect, Attorney General of Pakistan Abdul Hafeez Pirzada along with Aitzaz Ahsan, Farooq Naek, Farogh Naseem, Asma Jahangir, Kamran Murtaza, advocates, the Pakistan Bar Council vice-chairman and the Supreme Court Bar Association president are requested as special invitees to assist and guide the committee in its next meeting. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) secretary has appeared before the Senate Committee and has relied on the orders of the SC dated on March 4, March 6 and March 10. These orders are expressed in imperative terms and contain clear directions from the court to hold LG elections in Islamabad not under any law but under “the anticipated legislation”. It has not been denied by the ECP secretary that the “anticipated legislation” mentioned in the order of the SC was as yet the property of the Parliament in the form of a bill. No law, as yet, been approved by both the houses in accordance with Article 70 of the constitution. As such, it could not be described as a law nor could it be acted upon.
