WASHINGTON: US Congressman Sheila Jackson Lee commended the sacrifices rendered by Pakistani troops in the fight against terrorism and has called for promoting ties between Pakistan and the United States by focusing on common goals.

Speaking at an interfaith-cum-Iftar dinner, hosted by Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Jalil Abbas Jilani at the embassy Thursday night, Congressman Jackson Lee, who is also the co-chair of Congressional Pakistan Caucus, said that the holy month of Ramazan brings a message of peace and prosperity. She paid tributes to the Pakistani troops who were engaged in fighting terrorism in the country and said it was important to counter this menace all around the world. As we value the sacrifices of American troops in fighting terrorism, we also value the sacrifices of Pakistani troops who are combating terrorists in their country, the Congresswoman told the gathering attended by leaders from the Muslim, Christian, Jews, Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh communities.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee said there could be differences between Pakistan and the United States as no nation was perfect, but stressed the need of focusing on similarities to promote between the two countries. Speaking about Islam, she said that many Americans do not know that Thomas Jefferson, an American Founding Father and third president of the United States, used to read the Muslim holy book of Quran for knowledge about the natural law and natural rights. Congresswoman Jackson Lee is an influential voice in Washington and is a member of over 45 Congressional Member organisations. She is serving her eleventh term, according to her website, and represents the 18th Congressional District of Texas.

Ambassador Jilani earlier welcomed the representatives from different faiths and denominations and said that all citizens of Pakistan enjoy equal rights and freedom, including the freedom to practice their faith.
