NAB submits modified report on mega scams
By Zeeshan Ghayur

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday submitted before the Supreme Court (SC) an amended report on 150 mega corruption cases, with addition of two more columns mentioning the date of application against the accused and the date of verification.

Earlier on July 7, NAB officials had submitted a list before the court which included cases against high profile figures, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, former president, three former prime ministers, ministers and top bureaucrats. However, the court had expressed dissatisfaction over the report and had asked NAB to include two additional columns to the report. A three-member bench headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja is hearing the case, filed by Manzoor Ahmed Ghauri against NAB chairman and other influentials. The case aims at the scrutiny of the watchdog tasked for implementing anti-corruption measures across the country.

The amended report doesn’t provide the information in the required columns in case of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, former president Asif Zardari and former ambassador to United States Hussain Haqqani.

According to the documents, the report of alleged illegal recruitment of favourites in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) by Nawaz Sharif was filed by complainant Major General (R) MH Ansari on March 22, 1999 while an investigation in the case was initiated right away, foregoing the inquiry process. With regards to the case against Sharif brothers for constructing a road worth Rs 126 million from Raiwind to their family farmhouse, NAB said that an investigation is currently in process and that no conclusions have been derived as yet. In the case against Asif Ali Zardari, NAB says that no information is on record as to who provided the tip on which an application was filed by the bureau while the watchdog also lacks information with regards to the inquiry process. The NAB says that investigations against Ishaq Dar and Hussain Haqqani were initiated but doesn’t have information on who lodged the applications, the date of filing of the applications and the inquiry process. Next hearing of the case is scheduled for July 15.
