PTI, MQM lawmakers battle it out with resolutions in Sindh Assembly
Dr Alvi says don’t treat FIRs against Altaf Hussain as a joke

KARACHI – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) spent Wednesday afternoon moving resolutions against each other in the Sindh Assembly, both inspired by what they say is the other's criticism of the armed forces.

The PTI resolution asked the Sindh government to approach the centre against statements made by London-based MQM chief Altaf Hussain over interference by a British citizen in the internal affairs of Pakistan. It highlighted that the MQM leader had on various occasions made anti-Pakistan statements, and demanded for his British citizenship to be revoked so he could return to Pakistan and be tried in court.

Referring to recent reports about multiple first information reports (FIRs) being filed against the MQM chief, MPA Dr Arif Alvi said: "Do not treat this as a joke. These FIRs are being filed out of desperation." In its resolution, the party also wished for the British government to investigate the sources, and use of funding for the organisation.

In what appears to be a rejoinder, the MQM also moved a resolution against PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the Sindh Assembly. The resolution, which called for Imran to be de-seated from the National Assembly, said that the PTI leader made disrespectful comments about the army generals. The resolution referred to a video of Imran Khan making these remarks which it said was recently played on a private TV channel.

It further said that these remarks could be construed as an attack on a state institution and called for strict action against the PTI chairman under the Article 6 of the constitution. It also said that under Articles 62 and 63, Imran’s membership of the National Assembly should be terminated.
