PML-N wins by-election in Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Rana Akhtar Ali has won the by-election from Punjab Assembly constituency PP-100 Gujranwala by defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Ehsanullah Virk.

According to unofficial results, PML-N’s candidate Rana Akhtar bagged 49,991 votes while his opponent Ehsanullah got 28,338 votes. The seat fell vacated after former PML-N’s MPA Rana Shamshad Hasan was murdered two months ago.

The ruling party had awarded the ticket to Akhtar – brother of Rana Shamshad. Celebrations were seen at Akhtar’s home after the victory.

Addressing the gathering at his residence, Akhtar said that he was grateful to all voters for his win and would work for public welfare.

Earlier in the day, as many as 11 PML-N and PTI activists were apprehended following a clash between the workers of the two parties during PP-100 by-election, officials say on Sunday. Several people were injured when workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz clashed.

The incident took place in the aftermath of a Judicial Commission report rejecting all three rigging allegations regarding the 2013 polls.

Around 113 polling stations had been arranged for the by-polls, of which 22 were declared sensitive.

The Pakistan Army officials remained on guard for maintaining law and order during the voting process.

Gujranwala’s constituency PP-100 is believed to be a strong PML-N bastion, which was won by Rana Shamshad of the ruling party with a big margin in 2013 general election.
