WAPDA chairman irks Shah over Kalabagh Dam

Opposition leader says dam issue beyond mandate of a public servant

ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has said that being a public servant, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Zafar Mahmood should refrain from issuing statements over the Kalabagh Dam issue.

On Friday, he said that the three provincial assemblies had passed resolutions against the construction of the Kalabagah Dam. A public servant should not issue statements over the matter after passing of these resolutions, he said in a statement. He also said that the Kalabagh Dam issue was beyond the mandate of the WAPDA Chairman.

Shah said that the power shortage issue can be resolved through the construction of small dams, including the Bhasha Dam. He said that the government was trying to divert attention from the power crisis in the country by resurrecting the Kalabagh Dam issue.

Shah also stated that the chairman’s statements were against the spirit of federalism. He said that the chairman should first become aware of the basics of federalism before issuing such statements.

The opposition leader also said that the government and the public servants should avoid creating controversies especially on sensitive issues. “The government shouldn’t give rise to new challenges for the federation by using WAPDA chairman in this issue,” he added.
