Supreme Court orders appointment of EC members by July 28

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered on Thursday to appoint the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by July 28.

According to details, the Chief Justice remarked that had the process of appointment should have been started earlier so that the institution would not have become inactive.

In response to the Chief Justice's remarks, the Additional Attorney General said that the opposition was being consulted regarding the appointment of the Election Commission members. He also disclosed that after the 22nd Amendment, the appointments will take place 45 days later.

During the proceedings of the case, the Chief Justice asked the AAG as to why the process of appointments wasn't completed earlier on? The Chief Justice also asked that the main concern was not who was being consulted but the fact that had the process been started earlier, the institution would not have become inactive.

The Chief Justice stated that hopefully the same matter would not be stretched to six years since the inactivity of the ECP was affecting the whole system.
