Geelani urges nations to stop India’s reign of terror
SRINAGAR: Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani wrote a letter to various nations on Monday, urging them to stop India's reign of terror in the disputed state.In his letter, Geelani stated that there was a need to accept disputed nature of the state, repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and start a rapid demilitarisation process immediately.
The letter has been sent to the heads of the United Nations Security Council members as well as regional organisations such as the European Union, ASEAN, OIC and SAARC. The letter was also addressed to Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
"These countries have a special responsibility to intervene to stop this reign of terror by India in Jammu Kashmir... create an atmosphere conducive for the resolution of the Kashmir issue as per the principle of right to self-determination,” he wrote.
Tensions have been high in Jammu Kashmir since more than a week, after protests erupted when the Indian Army killed young Kashmiri Burhan Wani. Clashes between the Indian Army and protesters erupted in Jammu Kashmir in which more than 40 people were killed and as many as three thousand were injured.
Pakistan had opposed Indian atrocities in Jammu Kashmir by raising the issue at the United Nations.
