Shahbaz files Rs10 bn damages suit against Imran

LAHORE: Additional District and Sessions Judge Azfar Sultan on Friday issued a notice to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on a Rs 10 billion damages suit filed by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and sought his reply by July 21.

Shahbaz stated in the suit that in April 2016, Imran gave a malicious statement against him that he offered Rs10 billionto Imran through a common friend in exchange for withdrawing the Panama Papers case from the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The suit said the plaintiff had served a legal notice on the defendant, asking him to tender an apology within 14 days through print and electronic media that he didn’t. So the plaintiff was left with no option but to approach the court for recovery of damages.

The complainant said the baseless and defamatory statement by the defendant was widely circulated by the media, which lowered the integrity of the plaintiff and caused him extreme mental torture. He requested the court to issue a decree for the recovery of Rs 10 billion as compensation for the publication of defamatory content.
