PTI requests SC to summon PM for cross-questioning

ISLAMABAD: PTI counsel Naeem Bukhari on Monday said in the Supreme Court that the Gulf Steel Mill was not sold in 33 million UAE dirhams as claimed by the Sharif family.

He was presenting arguments before the three-member special bench of the apex court headed by Justice Aijaz ul Hasan over the final report of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) submitted on July 10.

Naeem Bukhari stated that Ministry of Justice UAE did not authenticated Gulf Steel Mill agreement which was reportedly signed on 14 April, 1980.

During the proceedings, he requested the bench to summon the prime minister and his family members for cross questioning.

Arguing before the bench, the PTI counsel said the JIT termed the Qatari letter and Sharifs' business with the Qatari prince as 'fiction'. According to the JIT, he said London flats have always been under the possession of Sharif family and Nawaz Sharif's view about business in Qatar has been changing since beginning.

The Supreme Court’s special bench resumed much-anticipated hearing of the Panama Papers case a week after the JIT submitted its report amid strict security measures.

Over 700 policemen, along with paramilitary personnel and officials of the local administration, have been deployed in and around the apex court for the hearing.

The special bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and comprises Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed had issued notices to all parties to submit their responses by today (July 17) following the submission of the report by JIT last Monday.

Prior to the proceedings of the case, Sharif family challenged the final report of the JIT terming it unfair and going beyond mandate and pleaded the Supreme Court to reject it.

The sources privy to the development said the ruling family has raised various objections over JIT report for its findings without using testified documents and the sources.

The petition also alleges biased attitude of the JIT members towards Sharif family.

Speaking outside the SC before resumption of the hearing, PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the entire nation is looking at the apex court as it is important day in the history of Pakistan.

Awami Muslim League chief Shaikh Rasheed said, “We are standing by the Supreme Court.” He added those criticizing the Panama JIT are cursing SC.

Jamaat-e-Islami chief said, “Nawaz Sharif will have to leave now.” “JI is stick to its demand of accountability of all,” he added. He said they did not want any corrupt in the parliament and as per Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution every politicians should appear for screening.

All the people named in Panama should be held accountable, he maintained.

PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said his party will accept SC verdict. “The Apex Court has done what the parliament failed to do.”

Sheikh Rashid termed Saifur Rehman and Sheikh Saeed as front men of Nawaz Sharif. “Maryam is proven to be the beneficial owner of the London properties,” claimed he.

After the court adjourned the hearing till tomorrow when the counsel of Sharif family will respond to the JIT findings, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said the court can only decide the case on the basis of law and evidences. She demanded of making the volume 10 of JIT report public.
