Nawaz’s real business is corruption, says Imran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday claimed that the real business of Nawaz Sharif was corruption and that was his fault.

He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family used businesses as a front to indulge in corruption. The PTI chairman claimed that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would be ousted if he did not resign, as the Sharif family could not provide anything in their defence in the Panama case before the Supreme Court.

Imran told a media conference that Nawaz and his family were given five chances to tell the truth and come clean in front of the people of Pakistan. “Nawaz was given five chances to tell the truth to the people, starting with the first hearing in the Supreme Court and the last chance being the JIT,” he noted.

Prime Minister Nawaz, he alleged, told lies everywhere and today he wondered he should be told what wrong he had done. Imran added the JIT report had come up with their 10 companies in London, which all were running in losses.

Imran again called for putting the names of the Sharif family on the Exit Control List (ECL), saying those who indulged in corruption of a few thousands and lakhs were behind the bars and those who pocketed billions were at large.

The PTI chairman claimed Nawaz Sharif had been caught and now he would land in the Adiala Jail and would not be able to go to Jeddah.

He dubbed Finance Minister Ishaq Dar the ‘biggest conman of Pakistan’ for leading in the trick of how to launder money.

Imran explained the JIT was formed by the Supreme Court so that Nawaz could answer the questions he could not respond to in the apex court. He questioned how the assets of the Sharif family increased year after year as the business entities they owned were continuously running in losses.

He also alleged that the development schemes initiated during the Nawaz tenure were meant to siphon off funds from those projects through front companies. “When Nawaz Sharif became the chief minister of the Punjab years ago, the Ittefaq Foundry went into a loss. Yet by 1993, the family had 30 factories,” he pointed out.

“The JIT brought to the forefront one fact, the business of the Sharif family is corruption,” alleged the PTI chief.

During the news briefing, Imran called for fulfillment of his four demands before the next general elections.

Imran called for grant of voting rights to overseas Pakistanis and said biometric voting should be introduced in the country to check rigging during elections.

The PTI chief asked for the reconstitution of the Election Commission, which must enjoy the trust of all parties and not just two parties (reference to PML-N and PPP). Imran alleged that the commission had lost credibility particularly with reference to not holding accountable those behind wrongdoings in the 2013 elections.

He said that the parliamentary committee with 50 percent representation from the treasury and opposition parties each should appoint members of the commission.

He charged that judicial commission on 2013 general elections had found 40 serious flaws and to address those, nothing was done so far. He added the Election Commission had failed to ensure free and fair elections and referred to recent by-elections in NA-260 and PS-114, which were marred by rigging.

Imran demanded that the caretaker government during the elections be formed after consultation with all the parties instead of just two parties.
