Chaudhry Nisar’s much-awaited presser postponed till Monday

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has postponed much-awaited press conference, scheduled at 5:00 PM today (Sunday).

Sources said the doctors have advised Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart to take rest for 24 hours. The presser will now take place at 5:00 PM tomorrow (Monday).

According to Geo News report, Nisar is suffering from back pain, was advised by doctors to rest for at least one more day before holding a press conference.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson has categorically stated that the presser was postponed only because of health reasons and advised media from speculations over it.

Earlier, there were reports Nisar will announce to step down as Interior Minister after differences with the party leadership.

However, Geo News citing the sources had reported that the presser would not be against the government or the prime minister as the minister was likely to lash out at the role of opposition parties in the Panama Papers affair.

Sources had stated further that the minister may only resign from his ministry in protest if Defence Minister Khawaja Asif becomes the interim premier in case the prime minister leaves office.

On Saturday, the government made frantic efforts to persuade Interior Minister Ch Nisar but the last-ditch effort by PML-N to bring him back into the fold failed as he told Kh Saad Rafique and Rana Taveer that he would not step back from his position.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif sent two senior ministers on Friday to meet Ch Nisar and to try allay his concerns. The meeting took place at the Punjab House during which they invited the interior minister to attend the party meeting which he refused.

Sources said that during meeting they admitted that Ch Nisar's stance is correct and that other ministers too were sidelined during the Panama issue but this is the time they must stay united and show strength to the political rivals amid rising pressure.

The two-member delegation returned after Ch Nisar clearly told them that his stance is based on principles and he will not budge.

Reports are that the minister has decided to end his 35-year-long association with Nawaz Sharif.
