Aitzaz demands open JIT proceedings

LAHORE: PPP veteran leader Senator Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan has demanded the Supreme Court to make open the proceedings of the JIT holding inquiry into Sharif family's offshore assets.

An impression was being created by PML-N ministers and parliamentarians through some quarters of the media that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s sons, Hussain Nawaz and Hasan Nawaz, were interrogated for six to seven hours by the JIT, which is baseless and completely ridiculous, he said while replying to reporters' queries at an Iftar dinner he hosted for the PPP workers and leaders of NA-124 Lahore here on Saturday. Other PPP leaders Naveed Chaudhry, Samina Ghurki, Abid Siddiqi and PPP Lahore President Azizur Rehman Chan were also present besides a large number of workers. Aitzaz Ahsan contended that no JIT in such a case would ever require such a long time for one sitting of investigations as being propagated by government quarters. “In my opinion only half an hour would be enough to ask the Premier’s sons to present the proofs of their money trail and authentic documents of the purchases. Since they have no money trail and proof of money transfer, they don’t need to be with the JIT for more than one, or maximum two hours, to allow the JIT to complete its job,” he said. Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said according to law the onus of proof was on who possesses a property, to show the registration papers of his possession. If one failed to show the registration papers of his house, he lost the right to be deemed as legitimate owner, he added.

When his attention was drawn towards criticism and accusations PML-N ministers and MNAs against the JIT, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan termed it ‘friendly fire’. They needed to malign the JIT to show to the world that the ruling family had earned a ‘hard-fought’ and ‘genuine’ legitimacy in the end, he said.
