35 micro hydropower plants being set up in Kohistan

MANSEHRA: The Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) would build 35 micro hydropower plants in Upper Kohistan with the financial assistance of the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (PEDO). “We have built two micro-hydropower plants. We are supplying cheap and uninterrupted electricity to over 200 households in remote parts of the district,” Zubair Khan, the programme manager in Upper Kohistan, told reporters on Saturday.

He said that 50 kilowatts micro hydropower plant was installed in Kaz Jalkot Union Council and 20 kilowatts micro hydropower plant was set up in Jimra Union Council in the district. “Both the micro-hydropower plants were installed at a cost of Rs8 million and over 200 households are benefiting from them,” he added.

The SRSP programme manager said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was building 356 micro-hydropower plants in the province and 35 of these would be built in Upper Kohistan. “Kohistan is rich in water resources so the government has decided to install 35 micro-hydropower plants in the district to meet the energy needs of the local population,” said Zubair Khan. He added that the people of Kohistan living in the mountainous parts of district were still without electricity. “The establishment of the 35 micro- hydropower plants would bring a revolutionary change in their lives,” he hoped. He said the selection of sites for the establishment of the remaining 33 micro-hydropower projects was in progress. He added the projects were being executed with the view to provide cheap and uninterrupted electricity to the local people.
