Newly-elected Senators take oath

ISLAMABAD: The Senate session began here on Thursday morning with Senator Ishaq Dar who was nominated as the Presiding Officer in the chair.

During the session, 46 newly-elected Senators took oath as members of the Upper House. The oath was administered by Ishaq Dar.

Hasil Bizenjo was not present in the House while Senator elect Raheela Magsi was present in the Senate galleries but could not take oath due to some legal complications.

Following the oath taking ceremony, the newly elected members of the Upper House signed ‘Roll of Members’.
The elections for the post of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman will held at 3:00 PM today.

The ruling PML-N and opposition parties had earlier agreed to support Senator Raza Rabbani, the PPP’s candidate for the office of Senate Chairman who was elected unopposed.

Nomination papers for the post of Deputy Chairman have been filed by JUI-F’s Abdul Ghafoor Haidery and Hafiz Hamdullah. Earlier it was reported that opposition parties had met and agreed to support a candidate of the JUI-F from Balochistan for the post.

In a surprise move the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also fielded a candidate for the Deputy Chairman post. Senator Shibli Faraz also has the support of the JI .

Jehanzeb Jamaldini from the BNP-Mengal has also filed his nomination papers for the post.
