Journalists protest on Press Freedom Day in Balochistan

QUETTA: A protest demonstration was staged outside the Quetta Press Club to mark the International Press Freedom Day in Balochistan and to commemorate the slain journalists in the province.

Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) President Irfan Saeed, senior journalist Shahzada Zulfiqar, Saleem Shahid and Raza Rehman addressed the protesting journalists who were holding banners and placards and chanting slogans in favour of free press in Balochistan.

They said that journalism has become one of the toughest jobs in Balochistan but despite all the unforgiving circumstances, the journalists are rendering their duties honestly. They said that as many as 38 journalists have been killed so far in the line of duty in Balochistan. They said that the journalists in Balochistan have to face pressure from various banned outfits and political parties. They lamented that the assailants of journalists have not been arrested so far, adding that the Balochistan government had constituted various committees but their reports were never made public. They said that the dependants of the slain journalists could not get any compensation amount from the government and many families were still waiting for financial aid from the government, but the government only makes claims never to be implemented.
