KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday extended bail of Zulfiqar Mirza till May 19 in three cases registered against him in Badin District.
Estranged Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Zulfiqar Mirza appeared before the anti-terrorism court after his bail ended in the three cases registered against him. The former home minister’s bail was granted against surety bonds worth Rs100,000 each in the three pending cases.
Speaking to media persons, Mirza said his next plan of action is to fight PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari out of Sindh. “We have to bring back Bilawal Bhutto in Sindh to fulfil the wish of Benazir Bhutto of providing rights to the people,” he added. A large number of his supporters gathered outside the court while supporters of Zardari also confronted him and chanted slogans against him. Police took strict security measures in the vicinity of the court over security concerns.
The roads going to the ATC were closed by placing containers whereas a contingent of more than 1,500 policemen, police mobiles, armoured vehicles and two bomb disposal squad (BDS) teams were deployed in the surrounding areas of the court.
Earlier, Mirza along with a convoy reached Karachi where he was given a rousing reception. He and some of his supporters were carrying Pakistani flags. The former home minister was also carrying photographs of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Besides tight security measures, media was also banned from entering the ATC and Sindh High Court (SHC). Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Zahid Hussain said that journalists are not allowed to enter the court as per the court orders. SHC had earlier transferred the cases against Mirza, registered under the Anti-terrorism Act, from Badin to Karachi.
Zulifqar Mirza and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abdul Qadir Samoo exchanged harsh words after the police officials attempted to nab close companion of Mirza.
Mirza has been charged of damaging a police station, closing shops forcibly and looting money from two shops during protests in Badin and the cases against him are being investigated into.
