PM launches ‘Credit Guarantee Scheme for Small Farmers’

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif launched “Credit Guarantee Scheme for Small Farmers” at a ceremony in Islamabad on Thursday afternoon.

Addressing the ceremony, he said the scheme was aimed at ensuring trickle-down effect of progress and prosperity to under-privileged sections of society.

“There is a complete road map for agriculture sector in the election manifesto of PML-N, which envisages giving it status of an industry and affording benefits of the modern technology to the small farmers who are currently backward, and it is responsibility and priority of the government to improve their lot,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif referred to the state of economy that the PML-N inherited in June 2013, and said graph of the economy was going down, currency was losing its worth, foreign exchange reserves were declining, law and order deteriorating and the country was in darkness due to energy shortages.

He said tangible measures have been initiated to address these challenges, and now the country was back on track and this was acknowledged by multilateral institutions.

The premier said inflation rate was at a reasonable level and programmes were initiated to overcome energy problem, adding that only today the government decided to allocate Rs 250 billion for establishment of power plants during next budget.

Speaking about the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the prime minister said: “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a programme for progress and development of Pakistan and some internal elements and some foreign forces are trying to create hurdles in its implementation. These forces do not want Pakistan to continue its march on the road to development.”

About law and order situation, he said operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched to eliminate terrorism, and the operation has achieved significant successes. He condemned the attack on innocent and peace-loving people in Karachi on May 13, and assured that criminals involved in this heinous act would be apprehended and brought to justice.

Prime Minister Sharif said it was unanimously decided to establish military courts to award speedy punishment to perpetrators of heinous crimes. He asked banks to open their institutions for youth and down-trodden classes as well, saying they earn money from Pakistan and it was their duty to afford equal opportunity to all citizens.
