ISI must gear up to counter anti-Pakistan moves: COAS
*Gen Raheel emphasises need for more proactive role of intelligence agencies for a counter campaign against terrorism, hostile agencies working to destabilise Pakistan

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Friday emphasised the need for more proactive and coordinated role of intelligence agencies for an effective counter-terrorism campaign and to counter moves of hostile agencies to destabilise Pakistan.

During his visit to ISI headquarters in Islamabad, the COAS emphasised the need to further coordinate and synergise a combined civil-military intelligence effort at national level by providing all agencies requisite support and ever developing modern intelligence techniques.

According to the ISPR, ISI Director General Lt Gen Rizwan Akhtar briefed the COAS about internal and external security situation of the country and counter terrorism operations.

After a briefing on pre-empting a number of terrorist acts and successful intelligence-based operations, the COAS appreciated ISI’s role in preventing numerous terrorist acts.

The COAS said that most of the achievements and successes of intelligence agencies go unnoticed but their accomplishments for the defence of the country are phenomenal which deserve due recognition and acknowledgment.

The visit of the army chief to the ISI headquarters comes days after gunmen on motorcycles gunned down at least 43 members of the minority Ismaili community as they travelled in a bus in Safoora Chowrangi area in Karachi.

On Friday, a lone gunman on a motorbike shot dead a senior police officer belonging to the minority Shia community in Karachi, the third in a sudden spate of killings targeting senior officers in the city.

Troops began preparations on Friday for an offensive to try to push the Taliban from their last major stronghold in mountainous North Waziristan. The heavily forested ravines of the Shawal Valley are dotted with Taliban hideouts and the area is a key smuggling route into neighbouring Afghanistan.
