LHC issues notices in contempt of court plea against NA Speaker

LAHORE: Hearing a contempt of court petition on Monday, the Lahore High Court issued notices to respondents including National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq for not making a decision on a court order regarding the president’s power to grant pardon and immunity from appearing before the court.

The petition, filed by Lahore resident Iqtidar Hussain, challenges two constitutional articles: Article 45 which gives powers to the president to grant pardon to any prisoner, and Article 248 which provides protection to the president, prime minister, governors and others from court proceedings.

The petitioner submits that the court had sent the matter to the speaker for making a decision but he had failed to make any decision.
He has sought directives to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the Speaker for not implementing the order.

Hearing the case today, the high court issued notices to respondents, including Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, asking them to respond within two weeks.
