Imran flays Nawaz over US drone attack

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday condemned US drone attack in Balochistan that reportedly killed chief of Afghan Taliban, Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

The former cricket hero was speaking in Battagram where he inaugurated power projects, according to Geo News.

He severely criticized Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for the drone attack. “When not in power Nawaz Sharif says he will not allow drone attacks to happen…but now it seems he can do anything to stay in power,” Imran Khan said.

Imran Khan has long opposed US drone strikes in Pakistan that previously targeted militants in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region on the ground that the attacks are counterproductive in Islamabad’s war against extremism and terrorism.

The drone attacks had also resulted in the deaths of civilians in tribal belt near Afghan border.

The US authorities on Saturday confirmed Mullah Mansour was killed in a precision attack in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s foreign office and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also condemned the attack.

During a meeting with US ambassador David Hale on Wednesday, Army Chief General Raheel Sharif also expressed concern over the attack and said “such acts of sovereignty violations are detrimental to relations between both countries and are counter-productive for ongoing peace process for regional stability,".
