ISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior Affairs Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Friday said that 25 million families will be focused during the re-verification process of all CNICs.

Addressing a press conference here at NADRA headquarters, Nisar said that all CNICs in the country shall be re-verified within the next six months, adding that the government was taking steps to block identification documents belonging to suspicious individuals.

The minister said that a time period of two months was being given to nullify fake identification cards as all such individuals who possess such ID cards are supposed to return them to NADRA offices during the announced specified period otherwise strict action shall be taken.

He said a 48-hour notice had been issued to NADRA to come up with a plan to verify all the issued CNICs.

He added that the decision had created a huge pool of criticism with many saying that it would be a waste of time and resources. However, he said, there can be no compromise on security of the nation.

“It is unbearable for any sovereign and democratic nation that its citizenship is being sold," said Nisar, adding that those government officials involved in issuing falsified documents had sold the sanctity and solidarity of the country.

He said that Wali Muhammad’s NIC was issued manually in 2001 but no action was taken. His passport was issued in 2005 and was renewed in 2012, adding that it was due for renewal in October of the current year.

While answering a question, he said that every head of the family will be sent a letter by NADRA requesting for the verification of respective family members.
