Over 16,000 cops to guard Karachi

KARACHI: In view of Muharram security plan, Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali on Saturday directed police to ensure by name deployment of police commandos including police personnel and officers of reserve platoon, and police stations constituting crises response teams under post disaster management cell.
While inspecting the contingency report compiled by Karachi police regarding police deployment on Muharram 8 for security of Muharram congregations and processions, he urged every possible action to ensure precautionary measures in an emergency situation and stressed that ambulances, fire brigades vehicles, and vehicle lifters facilities should be made available along routes of mourning processions.
“All the data of people abiding in hotels, guesthouses, and lodges should be identified and certified thoroughly and security around procession, main crossings of congregations should be more tightened,” he added.
Jamali further urged emergency camps should be established at different parts of the procession route and strict monitoring around medical camps, sabeel should be ensured.
The report further revealed that 16,613 police personnel and officers would be deployed in different parts of the city for security purposes on Muharram 8 when more than 610 congregations would be held and about 160 processions taken out including 35 sermons and 15 processions of Sunni school of thought followers.
Meanwhile, Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has directed to make foolproof security at the sensitive locations in district Malir for central majalis and processions regarding Youm-e-Ashur, while the arrangements for civic issues including lights, water, cleanliness, sewerage should be completed.
He said this during a detailed visit to district Malir with Deputy Commissioner Malir Qazi Jan Muhammed and civic and security officers on Saturday. He also visited imambargahs and routes of central processions.
On the visit to the central imambargah of Jaafar Tayyar Society, while talking to the Ulema and caretakers, Siddiqui said the government had made successful arrangements for security and civic issues last year, therefore, Muharram was spent peacefully.
