Ghani calls on Gen Sharif, assures cooperation to jointly curb terrorism

RAWALPINDI - Afghan President Ashraf Ghani visited the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Friday. Besides other senior ministers, Afghan president was accompanied by Minister for Defence General Bismillah Muhammadi, Afghan Chief of General Staff General Sher Muhammad Karimi and senior Afghan security officials.

Afghan delegation was given detailed briefing on security situation on the Pak-Afghan border. Advisor on National Security Sartaj Aziz, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Defence Secretary Lieutenant General (retired) Alam Khattak and Inter-Services Intelligence Director General Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar were also present.

Afghan president appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to fight terrorism and sacrifices rendered by the nation. He said that Afghanistan wants to bolster security and defence ties with Pakistan including cooperation in training and border management. He also assured of Afghan cooperation to jointly curb the menace of terrorism.

Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that upon arrival at the GHQ, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif received the Afghan President. A smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan Army presented him guard of honour. Ghani laid floral wreath at the Shuhada Monument and offered Fateha.

Earlier, Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Ishaq Dar and Sartaj called on the Afghan President. During the meeting Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to promote bilateral cooperation in economic and trade relations for the benefit of the two countries. Speaking on the occasion, Sartaj said that Pakistan accords great significance to its relations with Afghanistan. He offered cooperation to Afghanistan in various sectors.

Ghani arrived in Islamabad on Friday for a two-day visit to Pakistan. He arrived at the Nur Khan Airbase where he was received by Sartaj. Ghani was accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior leaders, cabinet ministers, high-ranking officials and business representatives.
