SC dismisses three petitions filed in 1997 for disqualification of Nawaz
*Three-judge bench declares identical petitions ineffective due to non-prosecution *Pleas were filed by PPP politicians Syed Iqbal Haider, Manzoor Qadir and Babar Awan

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Declaring them ineffective the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed three petitions against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that were filed when he was the premier in 1997 that sought his disqualification.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk declared these three identical petition ineffective due to non-prosecution and disposed them off. These petitions were filed by the three PPP-associated politicians, Syed Iqbal Haider, Manzoor Qadir and Babar Awan, against the 14th Constitutional Amendment. Similarly, the apex court earlier this month rejected the government’s pleas regarding the dismissal of the prime minister’s disqualification petitions filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ishaq Khan Khakwani and PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Gohar Nawaz Sindhu. The three-member bench referred the case to the chief justice of Pakistan while suggesting constituting a larger bench, if deemed fit, and also called for ensuring the interpretation of the articles 62 and 63 of the constitution. Meanwhile, Justice Ijazul Ahsan of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday reserved the verdict on the petition of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq against the election tribunal’s proceedings on election petition of PTI Chairman Imran Khan seeking recounting of votes polled from NA-122, Lahore.
The speaker had submitted that after facing defeat in general election Imran Khan filed an appeal before the election tribunal for recounting and inspection of the votes. He said the documents and affidavits submitted by Imran to the tribunal were not original, rather photocopies. He said the tribunal could not hold proceedings unless original documents were provided to it.
