MUZAFFARABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday stated that India has displayed negative approach by terminating the dialogue process on the longstanding issue of Kashmir.

While addressing the meeting of Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) Council, he said that by accusing Pakistan of providing a safe haven to militants, India was actually trying to conceal its own atrocities. He said that by terminating the foreign secretaries’ talks, India exhibited inflexibility and negative attitude.

The prime minister said that the Kashmiris were being the victims of state terrorism and further stated that Kashmir issue should be resolved through peaceful dialogues. He said that India had always exhibited its traditional stubbornness regarding Kashmir issue.

He expressed his concerns over the silence of UN and international community on the issue and urged them to take initiative for resolution of the issue according to UN Security Council’s resolutions and the aspiration of Kashmiri people.

“This issue cannot be resolved with use of force and we will keep extending our moral and political support to the Kashmiris, Nawaz said. He said that economic prosperity in the region could not be achieved without peace. He made it clear that Pakistan would speak with Kashmiri leaders before it enters into dialogue with India.

“It is our fundamental belief that the Kashmir issue should be resolved through dialogue. My government initiated dialogue with India but India cancelled the scheduled foreign secretary talks,” he said. “Before dialogue with India, I have decided to engage with Kashmiri leaders,” he added.

Nawaz also mentioned the recent skirmishes on the Line of Control (LoC), which he said that the army befittingly responded to and politicians condemned unanimously. The prime minister has said Pakistan and Kashmiri people were bonded with eternal bonds.

He said that his government was proactively highlighting the issue of Kashmir at every forum. The prime minister said that he raised the issue in United Nations (UN) General Assembly meeting in last September. He said declaring the struggle of Kashmiris as terrorism was wrong approach of India.

He said that Pakistan was rendering great sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. The prime minister distributed cheques of compensation worth one million rupees each among 37 families of those who lost their lives during the recent rains and floods in Azad Kashmir.

Nineteen families of the heirs had already been given the compensation cheques as 56 persons had died in the flood and rains in AJK. Nawaz met with the affected families and expressed sympathies with them. Meanwhile, a delegation of Pakistan Muslim League-N Azad Kashmir led by its President Raja Farooq Haider Khan called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The delegation discussed with the prime minister about the matter of development in AJK and latest situation obtaining in Indian-held Jammu Kashmir. Earlier, the prime minister was given a detailed briefing about the development projects by the Azad Kashmir chief secretary.

Nawaz was informed the Central Working Party has given approval for Mangla Upraising project. He said detailed survey about the damages caused by recent floods has been completed. He said that 28,000 houses were damaged while Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot and Bagh were affected most by the rains and floods.

On arrival, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was received by the AJK president, the prime minister and the AJK cabinet members.
