Rescue operation continues for sixth day since factory collapse

LAHORE: Rescue operations continue even on the sixth day, at the Sundar Industrial Estate where a factory producing shopping bags collapsed killing dozens and injuring many more.

The last reported figures by Geo News put the death toll at 53 while 103 were injured. However speaking to journalists the DG 1122 told journalists that 43 bodies have been recovered while 103 people have been rescued alive from under the rubble.

After 51 hours of operations the teams were able to rescue a boy trapped under the rubble. Officials say the operation will be completed today.

The body of the factory owner, Rana Ashraf, wsa also recovered over the weekend.

Rescue officials said over a hundred survivors had so far been pulled from the wreckage of the four-storey Rajput Polyester factory which manufactured polythene shopping bags.

Injured survivors said the factory’s owner, who was adding a new floor to the building, had ignored an advice from his contractor and pleas from his workers to stop construction after cracks appeared in the walls following a powerful earthquake last week.
