IHC annuls special court’s verdict in high-treason case
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) that reserved on October 18 the judgment in a plea filed by former prime minister Shaukat Aziz, former federal minister Zahid Hamid and ex-CJ Abdul Hameed Dogar, announced it on Tuesday, suspending an earlier verdict by a special court..
A division bench comprising Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi and Justice Aamir Farooq announced the judgment, directing investigative institutions to probe the issue without being influenced by verdicts of courts.
The petitioners challenged their nomination ordered by a special court to try them as abettor in the high-treason case initiated against former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf and others on the act of imposition emergency in the country on November 3, 2007.
Additional Attorney General Afnan Karim Kundi had earlier contended before the court that the federal government was ready to examine the role of any abettor for imposing emergency. However, he requested the court to expunge the remarks made by the special court against the federal government and the investigating agency.
Barrister Farogh Nasim, the counsel of Gen (retd) Musharraf while requesting the court to direct the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to re-investigate in a fair and transparent manner, had pleaded before the court that the former military ruler imposed emergency on the advice of then prime minister Aziz and the federal cabinet.
