Army chief discusses security issues with top US Senators

RAWALPINDI – Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Thursday met officials of the US Senate Armed Services Committee and discussed regional security issues, the Inter-Services Public Relations said.

According to a statement issued by the military media wing here, the army chief held a meeting with Committee Chairman Senator John McCain and other senior Senators at the Capitol Hill.

Senators Richard Burr and Dianne Feinstein noted that the Pakistan Army’s perseverance and commitment had degraded militant networks in the country. They also assured General Sharif of US support and cooperation against terrorism and extremism.

Senator McCain lauded efforts of the army – especially the leadership of the army chief – in fighting terrorism on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. He also emphasised the need to strengthen ties between Pakistan and the US.

With clear regional security perspective, the army chief highlighted the need for stepped up Pakistan -Afghanistan border management and sustained cooperation to deal with emerging threats, the statement said.
