Civil-military ties normal, COAS visit to US pre-planned: Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan Friday said civil-military relations were normal and the visit of Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif to the United States was pre-planned and usual.

“There exists a maturity and understanding between the civil-military leaderships and those who are thinking of any misunderstanding should keep in mind that things are normal and they should remain calm as nothing unusual will happen,” he said setting aside the perceptions of certain quarters about General Raheel Sharif’s visit to Washington.

At a press conference he told a questioner that the COAS had gone to United States with complete understanding, consultation and approval of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Summaries of such high profile visits were always prepared for approval of the Prime Minister, he said adding that the COAS had even accompanied the Prime Minister during some visits abroad.

The minister said the Prime Minister’s recent visit to the US was quite successful where he highlighted national interests.

The visit of the COAS to Washington was also pre-planned and nothing was unusual, he added.

He reiterated that such high profile visits were conducted after thorough consultations where matters relating to national interest were discussed and given importance.

“The COAS before departing for Washington met the Prime Minister and even he (COAS) also talked to me,” he added.
