Rabbani for early mainstreaming of FATA

NNI

ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani has said that mainstreaming of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) must be done at the earliest to ensure the access of tribal people to basic human rights.

Talking to a group of students affiliated with different political parties, who call on the Senate chairman at the Parliament House on Friday, Rabbani said that the people of FATA must have access to the higher courts as well as enjoying other rights promised under the constitution.

Senator Sajjad Hussain Turi was also present during the meeting.

The Senate chairman told the FATA students that the Upper House of parliament had constituted a Committee of the Whole to discuss and recommend the measures regarding legislative and administrative issues of FATA, which had held various meetings and deliberated with stakeholders.

He said that the committee had also reviewed the recommendations of the FATA Reform Committee constituted by the government. He expressed hope that all the political parties would soon reach a consensus for resolving the long standing issues confronting the FATA parliamentarians. He assured the delegation that they would be invited to attend the next meeting of the Committee of Whole so that they might present their view point and share their concerns on FATA issue.

He appreciated students for showing political maturity in evolving a consensus on common issues. He told the delegation that a committee of the Whole was also constituted on revival of student unions. The committee, he said, had passed a resolution urging the government to restore student unions, which serve as nursery for political leadership in the country.
