ISLAMABAD – Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday said that United States should halt drone attacks in Pakistan permanently to remove a serious irritant in their relationship.

He said that sovereignty and self-respect were the cornerstones of Pakistan's relationship with other countries. He expressed these views while meeting a US delegation led by US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Daniel Feldman. US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson was also part of the delegation.

The minister said that the six months break in US drone attacks in Pakistan improved relations between the two countries and it was appreciated by all segments of the society. He said that United States and Pakistan were building and maintaining cordial relations during difficult times.

“We should concentrate on positives of our relationship and differences should be addressed. It’s important that US understands Pakistan's point of view,” Nisar said. He said that both the countries have a history of relationship based on shared values, adding that the history of strong ties dates back to 1950s.

He said that an increased interaction amongst the people of both the countries was need of the hour and greater exchange of parliamentary delegations would contribute towards that. On the occasion, US Special Representative Daniel Feldman said that US recognises and appreciates the sacrifices of Pakistan in the war on terror.

He said that US appreciates Pakistan for making relations more constructive and positive, adding that there was better understanding between the two countries at present. He also said that US supports democratic institutions in Pakistan and people to people contacts between the two countries would be promoted.

Feldman said that both the countries would continue co-operation in various fields.
