Punjab by-elections will be held under Army and Rangers watch: ECP

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army and Rangers will be deployed inside and outside the polling centres during the by-elections in Punjab, the ECP said on Thursday.

By-elections will be held in the constituencies of Punjab in NA-144 (Okara) and NA-122 (Lahore) and PP-147 (Lahore-XI) and PP-16 (Attock-II).

According to a notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the officer in-charge of Army and Rangers personnel deployed in the constituency will be delegated with special powers of a First Class magistrate while the Presiding Officer will also have the same powers in the precincts of his polling station.

In its notification, the ECP cited requests by Returning Officers which were endorsed by the District Returning Officer and the Provincial Election Commissioner of Punjab for “proper security provided by Pakistan Army/Rangers”.
