PM chairs high-level meeting on security situation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on the security situation here on Friday.

The meeting was attended by the country’s top military and civilian brass including Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif, DG ISI Lt. General Rizwan Akhrtar, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Rashad Mahmood, Federal Ministers Chaudhry Nisar and Ishaq Dar. Also in attendance were foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz and special advisor Tariq Fatemi.

During the meeting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said all steps should be taken to improve the security situation in the country. The ongoing operation in Karachi and the National Action Plan were also discussed. A decision was taken to increase the pace of the operations against terrorists, their supporters and financiers.

A briefing was given on Operation Zarb-e-Azb and the situation in neighbouring Afghanistan. The meeting also evaluated the dialogue process between the Afghan government and Taliban.
Earlier, COAS General Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed matters relating to the country's internal and border security.

According to sources, the prime minister and the army chief also discussed the prevailing situation in neighbouring Afghanistan and its possible effects on Pakistan. The sources said that the recent rise in Taliban attacks in the neighbouring country was also discussed during the key meeting.
