agencies/staff report

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan on Thursday demanded an audit of Nandipur Power project through Asian Development Bank

The PTI chairman said project’s actual cost was Rs 22 billion, and now it has risen to Rs 84 billion. He alleged the PML-N government, which said to control electricity crisis in six months, is not capable to achieve that target even in 2020.

“Initially, Shahbaz Sharif promised to end load shedding in six months; then Nawaz announced to end load shedding by 2017 and now National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) says it cannot be eliminated until 2020,” he alleged.

Imran also demanded an independent audit into the Neelum Jhelum project, saying the government did not allocate the required funds for the project which delayed it and subsequently, increasing its cost.

He continued his tirade against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, saying that that despite being the third richest person in the country, the premier’s name is not among even the top 10,000 taxpayers of the country.

“Today, I want to explain my statement regarding Nawaz Sharif being the most corrupt person in Pakistan.” Addressing the crowd in Okara, the PTI chief had called the premier ‘the most corrupt person of Pakistan’ and accused him of money laundering money, tax evasion and corruption.

Imran went on to say that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government failed to live up to the promises they made to the nation during the 2013 election campaign. He has also alleged that PML-N’s minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi raised airfare of a private airline and minted Rs 90 million from recently held PALPA strike.

“The circular debt has mounted Rs 600 billion under the ruling government”, Khan maintained. He said, “Compare to the circular debt in Musharraf’s era, which was Rs 200 billion, has increased to Rs 480 right after the Pakistan People’s Party government came in power.”

He said the construction cost of Islamabad Airport, which was Rs 37 billion in 2008, has raised to above Rs 100 billion. “LNG project, another government project details kept shrouded or hide by the PNL-N government,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, PTI Punjab organiser Chaudhary Mohammad Sarwar has demanded that the Nandipur Power project’s concerned minister and others responsible for the ‘mega scandal’ should be put on Exit Control List (ECL), as there was a potential threat that the minister concerned for Nandipur Power project will flee from the country He said that PML-N will be defeated and the PTI will win on October11. He said the PTI will hold a mammoth public meeting in Lahore today, which will be addressed by party’s chairman Imran Khan.
