Murad Ali Shah urges for planting more mangroves
KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that Pakistan was one of the top 10 environmentally vulnerable countries of the world and would require special initiatives and plans to combat climate change.
"Sindh is facing serious environmental issues which I am keen to address," this he said while presiding over a meeting on `Green Sindh project' for which Sindh government has already allocated Rs30 million.
Apart from it the federal government is going to launch Rs800 million Green Pakistan Project for which Sindh is the partner of 50 percent expenditures.
The ACS (Dev) Mr Waseem told the chief minister that his government has already allocated Rs200 million for the project the federal government was going to launch. This amount would be matched by the federal government.
The Secretary Forest , Mr Rizwan Memon who is also Senior Member Board of Revenue, said that on the forest side plantation of trees, improvement of forests and plantation of more mangroves would be undertaken for the developing habitation of marine lives and protection from cyclones.
Talking about wildlife side, he said under the project special arrangements would be made to improve habitation of wildlife, development of green belts in different cities and planting more trees.
The chief minister said that youth of the province would be involved in tree plantation and greening Sindh. "I am sure civil society would help us a lot if a serious initiative is taken by the government," he said.
It was pointed out that there was $1 billion fund for climate change. If these initial initiatives are taken the Sindh government can take considerable portion from the fund.
He directed ACS (Dev) Mr Waseem to take necessary measures and coordinate with international agencies for seek their funds for green Sindh and projects for climate change.
