Pakistan lauded by UN for passing bills against rape, honour killing

By: Online

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations (UN) termed the approval of bills against honour killing and rape by Pakistan as a ‘historic success’ on Friday.

The UN lauded the government on passing the much awaited anti-honour killing and anti-rape bills. UN Resident Coordinator Neil Buhne in a statement said hundreds of women – every year – have their rights violated, are abused physically and even killed in the name of honour.

The crises of violence and harmful practices against women are often seen as private matters – ‘outside justice’. The passing and implementation of such laws protect their rights and ensures the survivor’s well-being. The bill punishes the perpetrators in a bid to end violence against women across the country.

Buhne said the UN stands ready to assist the government to tackle the discrimination against women and provide support for its implementation – that include training officials handling such cases, establishing a mechanism to monitor, evaluate and conclude for better coordination.
