China frustrates Modi by defending Pakistan

Chinese Foreign Ministry says international community against linking terrorism to ‘any one country or religion’ against Indian efforts to declare Islamabad a ‘terrorist state’

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping blocked all Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attempts to link Islamabad with terrorism at BRICS (Brazil, Russia India, China, South Africa) summit.

“China and Pakistan are ‘all-weather’ friends. India and Pakistan are both victims of terrorism. In combating terrorism, Pakistan has made great sacrifices. This needs to be recognised by the international community,” Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Monday at a press briefing when asked to respond to Indian PM’s comment at the summit.

The international community is against linking terrorism to any one country or religion, she said. She advised India to amicably resolve the differences – as that’s what China desires.

On Sunday, the BRICS leaders issued a joint declaration on a range of measures. They also agreed to work together to combat ‘cross-border’ terrorism but Modi did not sign it and dubbed Pakistan ‘mother-ship of terrorism’.
