ISLAMABAD – Expressing concern on cross-border terrorism from Afghan side, Pakistan on Thursday categorically conveyed to Afghan authorities to take appropriate steps to eliminate safe havens of terrorists from its soil.

In her weekly press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said that the terrorists carry out attacks on Pakistani side from such safe havens present in Afghanistan. About 90 to 100 terrorists attacked a checkpost inside Pakistan on September 17, she said, adding that Islamabad has lodged strong protest with Kabul over the incident.

Referring to allegations from the Afghan side, the spokesperson said that Pakistan was an important and mature country and does not feel necessary to respond to every baseless allegation. She said that Pakistan was pursuing developments related to one of its journalists – Faizullah – detained in Afghanistan.

She said that the next hearing of his case was scheduled to take place in the next week. Tasnim reiterated that Pakistan has not launched any appeal for foreign assistance in the wake of devastating floods. However, she said that international agencies including the World Food Programme were providing assistance to the flood victims.

The spokesperson said that the UN General Assembly session was one of the most important forums to discuss significant issues. As per longstanding practice, she said Pakistan also makes its policy statement on the forum every year.

About any scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session this month, she said that the occasion would also be utilised to interact with world leaders.
