Flood emergency in Thatta and Sujawal

SUKKUR: District administrations of Thatta and Sujawal have declared emergency and advised the residents of low-lying areas to shift to safer places.
A water torrent of 400,000 to 500,000 cusecs is expected to pass through Sukkur barrage in next 24 hours. Currently, water inflow at Sukkur barrage is recorded at 340,792 cusecs while outflow is 252,697 cusecs. Kotri barrage is receiving 99,854 cusecs while outflow is 56,958 cusecs.
According to Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore, 342,912 cusecs of water is passing through Guddu Barrage and water level is decreasing. All other rivers are flowing normal.All protective dykes are being strengthened and are under strict vigilance round the clock. However, irrigation authorities have declared that there was no imminent danger to river embankments bunds as vulnerable points at Soorjani and Monarki bunds in Sujawal have been strengthened.
Moreover, Sukkur Barrage Chief Engineer Junaid Memon said, “Presently, our whole flood fighting machinery with manpower was available at each sensitive point and the entire River Indus embankments have been raised above level, made strong enough to sustain the pressure of high flood, and night monitoring of all embankments was being made.”
In a statement, the National Disaster Management Agency said that 24 people were killed in the past 24 hours in Punjab, raising the death toll from rains and flooding to 346. Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah said that the PPP leadership and Sindh Government realise the need of re-modelling or re-placing the Sukkur Barrage in future to protect the economic interests of the people.
