Imran, Qadri must shun insistence on resignation now: PM

Says those destabilising democracy and elected govt can’t be well-wishers of country; meets Shahbaz, discusses political crisis, floods, relief work

LAHORE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has advised the sit-in leaders Imran Khan and Dr Tahirul Qadri to shun their insistence on his resignation, and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman should exhibit maturity now, and come to parliament to discuss all issues. He was talking to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at his Jati Umra residence on Sunday. Nawaz said the leaders of Dharnas and ‘fairs’ have now moved to Karachi from Islamabad.

He said he was unable to understand why the PTI chief and his party had become enemies of the growing economy of the country and political stability. He said the Pakistani nation had rejected the politics of ‘hullabaloo and sit-ins’.

Nawaz said democracy would be protected at all costs for the defence and sovereignty of the country. Nawaz said those attempting to destabilise democracy and an elected government could never be the well-wishers of the country and the nation, and they would be defeated at all costs.

He said those uncertain about their political future were making unsuccessful efforts to sow the seeds of hopelessness among the people through their sit-ins.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also discussed the overall political situation, and the Punjab government’s efforts to eliminate dengue and the polio virus from the country.

The Punjab CM also briefed the PM about the floods in Punjab and the relief efforts by the government. He said a third party assessment should be held of the losses caused to people, crops, infrastructure and the means of communication. The two leaders also discussed a strategy about the talks between the political Jirga and the government team.
