Oppression
(Composed and recited by Aliya Hussaini, a Third Year student at UCLA, at a large student gathering to mark the Muslim Awareness Week)

How do you define oppression.
What’s with this obsession,
With the possession, of people’s minds.
We can cry and whine,
Of how it’s a crime,
But no one takes the time,
To implement change.

But seeing blood and tears,
Year after year
And no sign of it getting clear
Fills me with rage.

So the reaction
Is to take some action
And a call to stop the factions
Is how ink fills this page

First let’s assess the situation,
Really understand the challenge,
We’re facin’,
So we can mobilize our generation
This is the first stage.

We can’t just save the victims,
And relieve their symptoms,
That doesn’t overthrow the evil kingdom
It only keeps us in a haze

We have to change their thinking,
Otherwise to the grave they’ll keep sinking,
And their blood rulers will keep drinking’
Let’s free them from their mental cage

Education,
Is the answer to all nations
Know the regime’s creation
Then you can get out of the maze

I know the victimized are mad,
But running around all bomb clad,
Is not the plan Islam had
Death is not a Qur’anic phrase.

But just sayin’ don’t do it.
Won’t help anyone thru it
We have to organize in lieu of it
Like they did in the Sahaba days.

So make a resolution
To target the institution,
That promote the execution,
To win the game it plays.

So let’s have action with words
Best believe in unity we’ll be heard,
We’ll get recognition we deserve.
To protect the underserved,
All around the world and its not just a craze.
