Where is ANNA?
By Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

Amna Bibi of DG Khan is lying in a hospital with her nose and lip severed by the sharp dagger of her brother-in-law, who is now absconding in the nearby tribal area that the local police says is beyond its jurisdiction. Political authorities have promised to get him but with certain ifs and buts and provisos, which makes the brother-in-law’s early apprehension a little doubtful. Since the law-enforcing agencies are once again likely to fail to take any immediate action and bring the absconder to justice, the NGOs and the women rightists activists will be provided with yet another chance to flog Musharraf and his government for ‘siding’ with the brother-in-law.
By the way, where are the righteous mullahs, the venerable ulema, the true representatives of the down trodden masses – the political leaders of the area - and the mighty Sardars and Maliks without whose express consent Amna and her likes cannot breathe in or out. Why don’t they come to the rescue of the poor wretched woman who will carry the scars of infamy on her face – as a walking talking signboard - for the rest of her life?
Where is ANNA, the US-based NGO, and why does it not take on the political and religious leadership of the area? Or, will it wait for the opportune moment to publicize it internationally to defame Musharraf and reap yet another rich harvest?
