Is Gen. Musharraf Inviting People to the Streets?
By Dr. Ghayur Ayub

General Musharaf announced in Gilgit that he would quit the day people withdrew their support for him.
It seems he is deliberately challenging the opposition to come out on the streets because that is the only way his non-support in the public can be gauged. Such a mass movement may completely break down the already precarious law and order situation in the country, giving him an excuse to announce emergency to extend his military rule.
If this is his motive, I hope he realizes that things have changed since 1958, 1977 and 1999. To start with, he should take a hint by looking in the eyes of his ‘friend’ in the White House and understand his meaningful winks on his failing policies in curbing terrorism. Then he should see the unchecked price hike, rampant poverty, uncontrolled lawlessness and scandalous corruption (at the highest levels) in his militarized democracy under his ‘watchful eyes’.
