Fanatics on the Loose

One Maulvi Sarwar committed the murder of Zille Huma Usman – a minister of the Punjab government in broad daylight in Gujranwala city on Tuesday the 20th February. Not too surprisingly, not a word of condemnation has been uttered by any religio-political party against the heinous crime or its perpetrator.
What one gathers from the newspaper reports the said Maulvi Sarwar is a known serial killer of women and had murdered 6 or 7 women earlier but always managed to escape the punishment for lack of evidence as the witnesses who had earlier deposed against him soon recanted, whether under threat or inducement is not known. Powerful religious patrons not only seemed to protect him but also approved of his such cleansing murders of the ‘sinners’. Had the Gujranwala police kept an eye on the history sheeter most probably Zille Huma would have been alive today.
Let Huma’s tragic death not go in vain. It is high time that the fanatics on the loose and their patrons with their own brands of Islam were bridled well and proper to put to an end to such murders and other highhandedness being committed by them in the name of Islam.
