A State of Weightlessness

While on a long walk under the scorching sun on a sultry afternoon, we were carrying bags full of water bottles and food. Someone suggested that we could lessen the weight we were carrying by consuming the food and water. But another group member promptly posed the question: would we not still carry the same amount of weight albeit in our stomachs?
Can any of your readers solve this scientific puzzle?
